Cocktails to Kick The Cold and Flu

When it comes to a sore throat, runny nose, and body aches, you’ll do anything to start feeling like yourself sooner. Nobody likes being down with a cold or flu which is why we decided to gather some cocktails for you, to kick sickness to the curb.

Hot Toddy

When it comes to drinks that warm the soul and boost your immune system, the Hot Toddy is the pinnacle beverage. Have you ever wondered why that is? While there isn’t concrete medical evidence, there are a few reasons we can deduce that a Hot Toddy will combat your cold.

The first is the alcohol itself. After a long day of work, lots of people like a little drink to calm the nerves and help them fall asleep. It’s all about moderation though as too much alcohol can knock you down further.

The second is hot tea. Between the herbs in the tea itself or the spices you include in your hot water to brew your own, this herbal remedy really can help kick start your system. And the hot water/beverage will help speed up the mucus in your nasal cavities.

To make a Hot Toddy, all you need is:

  • Hot water or tea (of choice)
  • Whiskey
  • Lemon Juice
  • Honey

Hot Chocolate with Mint Liqueur

While too much dairy when you are fighting the cold and flu is not recommended, a warm mug of hot chocolate with a splash of mint liqueur may be a yummy pick me up to bring you some joy from your couch.

While we have no scientific reasoning to recommend hot chocolate–besides the fact that it is delicious– there are benefits to adding mint to your beverages.

“Peppermint and its main active ingredient, menthol, are natural decongestants and may even thin out the gunk in your chest,” according to WebMD. Not only is it good as a decongestant, but it also works to relieve an upset stomach, and get rid of that sick breath you may be battling.

To make this drink, prepare your favorite hot chocolate as you would, and add an ounce of a mint liqueur of your choosing.

Shot of Tequila

Tequila shots don’t have to be on the back burner just because you’re under the weather. Spice up your rest with a shot of tequila, lemon, and salt. Why? It is thought that the tequila will soothe and help remove the bacteria in your throat.

If you aren’t a big tequila drinker, the shock of it going down may also get that nose running, getting the mucus buildup gone sooner.

This is pretty straightforward to make. Just use your favorite (or on hand) tequila, rim a shot glass with salt and suck a lemon wedge after taking the shot!

Melt Away

We came across this recipe on Supercall and just had to share! This aloe vera cocktail will soothe away your every ache, reduce fever (maybe, probably?) and just feel so good going down.

The drink includes ingredients like Aloe liqueur, which will coat your throat, coconut water to restore electrolytes, and a honeydew creamsicle garnish.

Want to make it? All you need to make this Melt Away cocktail is:

  • 2 ounces of cachaça
  • .75 ounces of Aloe liqueur
  • 4 ounces of coconut water
  • 1 ice cream bar

Bullshot

  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon celery salt
  • Ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup vodka
