Path to Pescetarianism

When it comes to what type of diet a person can follow, there are a multitude. You can choose to eat everything, you can choose to cut out meat, you can choose to cut out meat and dairy products, etc. One diet that is good for your health is the pescetarian diet. According to Healthline, this diet is “largely plant-based diet of whole grains, nuts, legumes, produce and healthy fats, with seafood playing a key role as a main protein source.” So, it is essentially a vegetarian diet mixed with fish and seafood.

Coined in the 1990s, the term pescetarian comes from the word pesce, Italian for “fish”, and the word vegetarian. There are many reasons why you could choose to be a pescetarian. Some people go meat-free to be environmentally friendly and cut down on carbon emissions from livestock. Others decide not to eat meat because they do not believe in the slaughtering of animals. One final reason why many people choose to follow this diet is simply because it’s their choice.

Pack in the Protein – Pescetarianism

When people first cut meat out of their diet, they often fail to replace the protein that they’re losing. Here are a couple of meal ideas packed full of protein to keep you healthy.

Breakfast Avocado Baked Eggs

Following this Pescetarian Kitchen recipe, you’ll never have a tastier breakfast. Move over avocado toast, there’s a new sheriff in town. You’ll only need a few simple ingredients:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1/4 lemon juice
  • 2 eggs
  • Salt & black pepper
  • Handful of cilantro (chopped)

Preheat your oven to 450°. Slice your avocado in half and remove the pit. Scoop slightly larger holes in the avocado slices and crack the eggs into them. Sprinkle the lemon juice, salt and pepper over the avocados and place them on a tray in the oven for 15 minutes. When they are done, garnish with cilantro, grab a fork, and enjoy!

Sweet & Sticky Salmon Kebabs

This recipe, also from Pescetarian Kitchen, is perfect for summer BBQs. You’ll need the following ingredients to make this delicious meal:

  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli flakes
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 salmon fillet, cut into bite size cubes
  • 1/2 red onion, cut into bite size cubes
  • 1/2 zucchini, cut into thin discs
  • 1/2 lemon, cut into thin discs
  • 10 small tomatoes (grape or cherry tomatoes), halved

You’ll want to start by cutting your salmon, onion, zucchini, and lemon into bite-sized pieces and halving your tomatoes. Then, mix the lemon juice, mustard, olive oil, garlic, red chili flakes, and honey together in a bowl. Pour half of the marinade over the salmon pieces and refrigerate for an hour.

Remove from the fridge and put the chopped veggies and salmon on your skewers, brushing the remaining marinade over the kebabs before placing them on the grill. Leave them on the grill for around 10 minutes, making sure to turn them halfway through. Once they’re done, serve over rice, pasta, or any substitute you’d like!
