A History of L-O-V-E

Valentine’s Day was actually a religious celebration of Christian saints under the name Valentinus. The most famous of St. Valentines was actually beheaded by Roman emperor Claudius for performing secret weddings for soldiers. 

Valentine’s Day had taken on many forms since then including a Christian ritual of young Roman men drawing the name of a Saint they would aspire to be for the year to come. During the Middle Ages, the romantic themes of letter writing and courting became popular. Then, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the acclaimed poem, The Parlement of Foules whose interpretation has influenced the romantic traditions of Valentine’s Day we exhibit today.
